The Religious School is near the end of a process of creating a Children’s Library.

If you have any children’s books related to Jewish themes or resources that might be used in the school that you would like to donate to this project, please bring them to the Temple either during the High Holy Days, or when you next have opportunity to be at Temple Shalom.

Lay Leader Meeting September 25th

There will be a meeting of the lay leaders on Saturday September 25th, after the oneg shabbat, starting at about 12:30. The meeting, to which all current and potential lay leaders are invited, will be led by Bob Chodos and Samantha Albert. It will continue the examination of the new prayer book, Mishkan Tefillah, started at the previous meeting last Spring.

Sunday November 7 is the Global Day of Jewish Learning. In addition to other activities yet to be determined, the Canadian Branch of the JNF will be bringing Gil Hoffman, a columnist for the Jerusalem Post, to Temple Shalom at 2:00pm so that he can talk to us on a topic yet to be determined.

Ushering for High Holydays

Dear Temple Shalom members:

I am once again in charge of ushering duties for the High Holidays, and so would very much appreciate any help that you could provide. Basically, this would involve volunteering your time for a 1/2 hour shift at the front door of the Temple, ensuring that only members or recognized guests are allowed entrance. I would welcome help from any teenage or adult member in this regard. Please let me know via response to this email, or by emailing me directly at klibrach@sympatico.ca.

About Bnei Mitzvah Classes, October, February, and April

Mazal Tov on reaching this important point in your Jewish life journey! This is a year to make your personal commitment to learn our traditions, language and rituals in order to take your place in the community. At Temple Shalom we rejoice when our young people lead the congregation in prayer and Torah reading. We also know that this is a wonderful opportunity for families to study together and to discuss many aspects of becoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

This year I will be holding three sessions for the students and families of the B’nai Mitzvah class to learn together with me. It is extremely important that you attend all of these sessions so please mark these dates in your calendar now!

Shabbat, October 23 – 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

The Responsibilities of Becoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah

We will study the history and development of this important milestone and the specifics of the service: Torah, prayers, and more.

Shabbat, February 5 – 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

Mitzvot Connected to Becoming Bar / Bat Mitzvah – Tallit, Tefillin, Tikkun Olam, Tzedaka and more.

Shabbat, April 9 – 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

A Walk Through the Torah
We will study the importance of Torah, what it is, as we locate each student’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah Torah portion.
